I was greeted by this article in Fast Company this morning that outlines Urban Omnibus’ 50 Ideas for New City, which offers 50 innovative and creative solutions to improve the livability of our cities.
My favorite is number 12: Use Public Space to Share Ideas and Start a Conversation. I immediately thought of Portland, Oregon. In graduate school, I was lucky enough to take a trip there as part of a graduate seminar, to meet with some of the key folks to revamped the city, transforming it from industrial mill town to thriving hotbed of green innovation. One of the things that stuck out for me was this strong sense of community among the residents. It seemed like people truly felt they had a stake in the success of the city. Perhaps this is why Portland is the #7 place to move in the U.S. according to a survey from United Van Lines.
